Deadly Brain–Eating Amoeba Found In Hot Springs
Unfortunately, it is in fact true… there exists a deadly braining-eating amoeba found in hot springs. It’s name is Naegleria fowleri, more commonly known as “brain-eating amoeba”. Here’s everything you need to know before you take you next plunge:
What is Naegleria Fowleri?
Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba found in warm freshwater (e.g. hot springs, lakes, and rivers). It infects people when contaminated water enters the body through the nose. After entering the nose, this amoeba travels to the brain and causes PAM (Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis) and is usually deadly. You cannot get infected by Naegleria fowleri by swallowing contaminated water.
How Many People Die Each Year?
The good news is Naegleria fowleri infections are extremely rare. In the United States, from 2009 to 2018, 34 infections were reported. That comes out to an average of 3.4 deaths per year.
Should You Be Worried? or Avoid Hot Springs?
The simple answer is no. Statistically, your probability of being infected is extremely low. Compared to the 34 people who were infected in a 10 year period by Naegleria fowleri, in a 10 year period from 2001 to 2010, more than 34,000 people died of drowning in the U.S. Which means you’re probably 1,000x more likely to drown during you’re next recreational water experience than you are to contract this amoeba.
How to Stay Extra Safe While You Soak
If you’re looking to be extra cautious next time you take a dip, one simple thing you can do is avoid plunging your head under the water –as this amoeba enters through the nose.
